Gaskell Pitches a Gem to Win Game One of Twin Bill

Cazenovia, NY - The Cazenovia College baseball team split a Monday afternoon double header with Penn State Abington with the Wildcats taking game one 4-1 before falling 11-7 in the second game.

At the end of the day Cazenovia finds itself with a 7-9 record (1-1 NEAC) while the Nittany Lions now stand at 13-12 on the season (1-1 NEAC).

In game one of the twin bill Brian Gaskell (Saquoit, NY) would prove to be the difference maker for the Wildcats, spreading out seven Abington hits and only allowing one run in a complete game victory. Gaskell would strikeout eight batters on the day, including four of the last six batters he faced to close the game out.

The Wildcats scored early and it proved to be enough. Anthony DeSarro (New Hartford, NY) would drive in lead off man Adam Wiley (Marathon, NY) before eventually coming around to score himself on a fielders choice by Derreck Root (Marathon, NY) in the bottom of the first.

Cazenovia would add some insurance when junior Pat Shepardson (Little Falls, NY) would blast a towering solo home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the third inning. Later that inning Tim Ackerman (Fairport, NY) would drive in Root for the fourth and final run for the Wildcats.

In game two, the Wildcats would find themselves in a 9-1 hole heading into the bottom of the fourth inning before digging in to stage a rally. Jamie Barr (Frankfort, NY) would clear the bases with a bases loaded triple to drive in three Wildcat base runners, before scoring himself on an Erich Lange (Greenfield Center, NY) RBI.

Cazenovia would score another two runs in the fifth, but it would not be enough to complete the come back. Wiley continued his hot hitting by crushing an opposite field homerun in the third.

Cazenovia will be right back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Hilbert for another twin bill starting at 2:00pm.
