Entering 2012, Head Coach Pete Way ’03 enters his seventh season leading the Wildcats baseball team.  After six years guiding the program, a combined North Eastern Athletic Conference record of 55-31 (.640) has translated to two conference titles (2008 and 2009) and the baseball program’s first ever ECAC Tournament appearance (2009).

2008 and 2009 were banner years for the program marked by consecutive regular season conference championships.  In conference play during the two year span, Way’s teams hit .393, scoring 9.5 runs per game on their way to a 23-3 record (.885). The 2009 team set the record for wins in a season (22), earning the program’s first ECAC tournament bid (2009), as the team finished 22-16 after hitting .337 as a team with 27 homeruns.  Way’s 2008 team ended 21-12, at one point winning 18 consecutive games and marked the emergence of the program as an exciting offensive team; finishing 2nd nationally in stolen bases on top of a .340 average with 22 homeruns.

During his first season as Head Coach, the 2006 team finished 14-18 (12-6 NEAC) earning a 3rd place conference finish.  Way’s 2007 team finished 11-13 (10-6 NEAC) earning a consecutive 3rd place conference finish.  The 2011 team finished 9-21 (6-8 NEAC) following a 9-23 (4-8) NEAC record in 2010, bringing the overall record of Coach Way’s teams to 84-105 (.444) during his tenure.

Coach Way replaced his former coach, Pete Liddell, in 2006 after joining the staff as an assistant coach for the 2004 and 2005 seasons making him the program’s second head baseball coach in the modern era.  As an assistant during those two seasons, Way helped Liddell guide the Wildcats to a combined 36-31 record (.537).  The 2005 team finished 17-16, graduating five All-Conference performers.  The 2004 team finished 19-15 with conference championships in both the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) and the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC), with Liddell earning conference coach of the year honors.  The strong finish to his coaching tenure resulted in a career record of 159-213-1 (.426) over his 12 seasons; including 4 conference titles during that time.

Before he was added to the coaching staff, Coach Way played an integral role behind the plate for the Wildcats during the 2002 and 2003 seasons. During the Wildcats 18-win season and 2002 NEAC championship run, he would set a single season record after not making an error in 100 total chances, with 12 assists from behind the plate. Coach Way made just one error during his two year career, finishing with a .994 fielding percentage and 17 assists.

Prior to his time at Cazenovia, Coach Way played for the retired Hank Testa at Herkimer County Community College (HCCC). His sophomore year at HCCC ended with Herkimer’s first appearance in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region III Tournament in eleven years. Way transferred to Herkimer from Mansfield University (Pa.) during his freshman year, after winning the 1999 Section V HS championship at Gananda Central HS.

Coach Way serves a dual role on campus as the Director of the Annual Fund in the Office of Institutional Advancement, the College’s Development, Fundraising, Alumni and Parent Relations division.  He lives in Fayetteville, NY with his wife Sara with their two boysCy(age 6) and Nolan (born in in November, 2011).
