Rosemont Slips by Wildcats
ROSEMONT, Pa. - The Rosemont College softball team put not one, but two games into the win column today over the visiting Wildcats of Cazenovia College by final scores of 4-3 (9 innings) and 6-5. Both wins were of the come-from-behind variety. With the sweep the Ravens move to 2-6 overall (0-2 CSAC) and Cazenovia opens up 0-2 on their season.
The first game turned into the second nine-inning doubleheader opener in two straight dates. The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on one earned run. That lead would hold up until Rosemont began their comeback. Trailing 2-0 going into the bottom of the fifth, right fielder Ally Pizzo (Fr., Cumberland Regional, Bridgeton, NJ) singled to left center to lead off the inning. Second baseman Lexy Mrongowius (Fr., Henry E. Lackey, Bryans Road, MD) followed with a single up the middle putting runners on first and second. A third straight single, this one off the bat of center fielder Caitlin Mazzoni (Sr., Middletown, DE) plated Pizzo to cut Cazenovia's lead to 2-1.
The Raven's comeback continued in the sixth inning. Shortshop Gianna Pedone (Fr., Haddon Township, NJ) drew a walk and then advanced to third on two wild pitches. She was knocked home by Jessica Versage (Fr., Middle Township, Sea Isle City, NJ) on a hard single to left to tie the game at 2-2.
The game remained tied until the ninth inning. The Wildcats re-took the lead In the top of the frame. A groundout advanced Taylor Kubber to third base and Kubber scored on a single by pitcher Jenna Kraegar to put the visitors up 3-2. The Ravens rallied in the bottom of the 9th. With Versage placed on second, Pizzo sacrificed her to third, but an error put Pizzo on first with nobody out. After a popout, Mazzoni laced a triple to deep left-center field, allowing both baserunners to score and earning the Ravens their first win of the 2012 season, 4-3.
Both teams scored early in game two, with Rosemont taking a 3-2 lead after the first inning. Cazenovia tied the game in the top of the third, 3-3, and scored again to take a 4-3 lead going to the bottom of the 4th. Rosemont again countered to tie the game at 4-4 after four innings. The score remained tied until the bottom of the seventh.
Mazzoni earned a walk to start the inning. After a fly-out to left, catcher Hailey Summa (So., Scranton Preparatory, Dunmore, Pa.) singled. A Cazenovia error enabled Mazzoni to score and Summa to move to third on the error and throw. That tied the game at 5-5. Pedone then singled to score Summa and win the game for the Ravens, 6-5.
Rosemont pitcher Gabby Stamler (Fr., Plymouth-Whitemarsh, Lafayette Hill, Pa.) earned both wins for the Ravens. Stamler pitched a total of 10 innings, striking out five and walking none. She gave up ony one earned run in those 10 innings. Mazzoni was the workhorse in the nightcap, pitching 5 1/3 innings and striking out 4, walking two and ceding only on earned run.
The Wildcats are back in action tomorrow traveling to Sage for another twin bill starting at 12:00pm.
