Wildcats Can Not Hold on to Lead, Lose Two to Skidmore

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College softball team opened its 2012 home schedule with a sweep of Cazenovia.  The Thoroughbreds took game one 3-0 and rallied late for a 7-5 game two win.
Skidmore improves to 7-7 overall, while the Wildcats fall to 0-6.
In the opener, senior Sam Crose tossed a three-hit shutout, striking out two and walking none as she faced just one batter over the minimum. 
All of the Thoroughbreds' runs came with two outs as Carol Brown doubled home a pair in the third and Katie Peverada drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth to account for the Skidmore scoring.
In the nightcap, the Thoroughbreds got out to an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single from Julia Schwartz.  They added two more in the second on a bases loaded walk by Abby Shea and a Brown fielder's choice.
Cazenovia got on the board in the third on a Kim Norton (Mexico, NY) RBI groundout before Skidmore added two more in the bottom of the fourth on a two RBI single from Schwartz to make it 5-1.
In the top of the fifth, the Wildcats rallied with two outs.  After three straight singles to load the bases, Taylor Kubber (Theresa, NY) tied up the game with one swing as she belted a grand slam to left to tie it up at 5-5.
The Thoroughbreds responded in the bottom of the sixth as Shea scored on an error and Brown scored on a Schwartz sacrifice fly to take back the lead and give Skidmore the 7-5 win. 
Abby Fuhrman earned the win to improve to 3-3 as she allowed five runs (four earned) and struck out seven in the complete game effort.
Courtney Hibbard took the loss in game two, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits in 2.1 innings of relief.

The Wildcats will continue their season on Sunday traveling to Castleton for a 1:00pm start.
